Yelahanka Air Force Station: A Pillar of India's Aerial Excellence

Established in July 1942 as RAF Station Yelahanka, Yelahanka Air Force Station in Bengaluru has been instrumental in training pilots for transport aircraft operations. The station specializes in type-conversion training for navigators on the Antonov An-32, ensuring aircrew are adept at handling diverse transport missions. Beyond training, Yelahanka plays a pivotal role in logistics support, undertaking tasks assigned by Air Headquarters and Training Command. The base has hosted various aircraft, including the Mi-8, An-32, and Dornier planes, and previously accommodated a squadron of HAL Tejas before its relocation to Sulur Air Force Station. Strategically located approximately 22 kilometers from Bengaluru city railway station, Yelahanka remains integral to the Indian Air Force's operational capabilities.

A hallmark event at Yelahanka is the biennial Aero India air show, organized by the Defence Exhibition Organisation, Department of Defence Production, Ministry of Defence. Since its inception in 1996, this exhibition has evolved into Asia's largest military aviation event, attracting participants and spectators worldwide. The 15th edition, Aero India 2025, held from February 10 to 14, showcased cutting-edge aerospace technologies and featured aerial displays by aircraft such as the U.S. Air Force's B-1B Lancer. A significant highlight was the unprecedented presence of both Russian Su-57 Felon and American F-35 Lightning II fifth-generation fighter jets, offering a rare side-by-side comparison of Eastern and Western stealth fighter technology. Additionally, Russia proposed producing its advanced Su-57 stealth fighter jet in India for the Indian Air Force, aiming to enhance defense collaboration between the two nations. The event also served as a platform for global aerospace firms to explore partnerships with Indian companies, especially amid Western supply chain challenges. Companies like Airbus, Collins Aerospace, and Rolls-Royce are increasingly sourcing parts from India, with plans to double their sourcing within the next five years. Aero India 2025 attracted over 50,000 attendees, including nearly 800 exhibitors and more than 900 national and international manufacturers, solidifying its status as a premier event in the global aerospace calendar.
